A tall, confident 8-year-old who's ridden before may be ready for the next tier up; a cautious first-timer should start lower regardless of age. The single most important safety check is the foot test: seated on the bike, your child should be able to put the balls of both feet on the ground. If they're on tiptoes, the bike is too big.

Electric vs gas for kids
