Electric Dirt Bikes for Kids and Teens: A Parent's Buying Guide
Posted by LockTech & Gear on
Electric dirt bikes have become one of the best ways to get a young rider started in powersports. They're quiet, produce no fumes, need far less maintenance than gas bikes, and many come with adjustable speed settings so a bike can grow with your child's skill. But choosing the right one comes down to matching the bike's power to the rider's age, size, and experience. Here's how to get it right.
Why electric instead of gas?
For families, electric makes a lot of sense. There's no gas or oil to mix, no pull-starting, and no engine noise — just twist and go. Maintenance is minimal: charge the battery and check the tires and brakes. And because many electric bikes have selectable speed modes, you can start a beginner in a low-speed setting and unlock more power as they build confidence. That single feature makes electric far more forgiving for new riders than a fixed-speed gas bike.
Match the power to the rider
Voltage (V) and wattage (W) are rough shorthand for how fast and powerful a bike is. Use this as a starting framework, but always check each bike's stated age range, weight capacity, and top speed:
Youngest riders (roughly ages 3–7): low-voltage bikes around 24V with modest top speeds and small frames. These are about balance, confidence, and fun at walking-to-jogging pace.
Kids and younger teens (roughly 8–13): mid-power bikes in the 36V–48V range with bigger frames and adjustable speeds, so the bike keeps up as skills grow.
Teens and adults: high-power 60V–72V bikes that deliver real trail performance, higher speeds, and the torque experienced riders want.
Safety features to look for
Adjustable speed modes or a speed limiter: the single most important feature for a growing rider — cap the speed while they learn.
Reliable brakes: look for quality disc brakes front and rear.
Proper weight capacity: make sure the bike is rated for the rider's weight for safe handling and battery life.
Right seat height: the rider should be able to touch the ground comfortably.
Twist or thumb throttle appropriate to the rider's hand size and strength.
Picks by rider
We carry electric dirt bikes from MotoTec and Voltaic across the full range:

Don't forget the gear
No matter the bike, protective gear is non-negotiable: a properly fitted helmet every single ride, plus gloves, long sleeves and pants, and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Knee and elbow pads are smart for newer riders. And new riders should always start in an open, traffic-free area with adult supervision until they've mastered the controls and braking.
