How Fast Do RC Cars Go? Fastest RC Cars Explained (2026)

Posted by LockTech & Gear on

"How fast does it go?" is the first question almost everyone asks about an RC car. The answer ranges widely — from a gentle toy pace to genuinely shocking speeds. Here's what determines RC speed and what to expect.

LockTech & Gear is an authorized Redcat Racing dealer carrying RC vehicles from beginner-friendly to seriously fast, shipped free.

Typical speed ranges

Toy-grade RC cars usually top out around 5–15 mph — fine for young kids. Entry hobby-grade vehicles commonly run in the 20–35 mph range. Performance brushless models frequently hit 40–60 mph, and purpose-built speed machines can exceed 70 mph or more. The gap between a toy and a hobby-grade RC is enormous.

What makes an RC car fast

Several factors set top speed: the motor (brushless motors are far faster and more efficient than brushed — see our brushed vs brushless guide), the battery (higher voltage LiPo packs deliver more speed than NiMH), the gearing (final drive ratio trades acceleration for top speed), tires (compound and diameter), and weight and aerodynamics. Surface matters too — smooth pavement yields higher speeds than grass or dirt.

Hobby-grade vs toy-grade

Toy-grade RCs from big-box stores are built for low cost and modest speed, with limited or no upgrade paths and non-replaceable parts. Hobby-grade RCs (like Redcat) use real motors, ESCs, and serviceable components — they're faster, more durable, repairable, and upgradeable. If speed and longevity matter, hobby-grade is the way to go.

Can you make an RC car faster?

Yes — within limits and your skill level. Common upgrades include moving from brushed to brushless power, running a higher-cell LiPo (within the ESC's rating), changing the gearing for more top speed, and fitting better tires. Push too far and you risk overheating components, so upgrade sensibly and keep things cool.

Choosing the right speed for you

For young kids, a slower, durable vehicle is safer and more fun. For teens and adults, an entry brushless basher or a fast on-road car delivers the thrill most people are chasing. Match the speed to the driver's experience and where they'll run it.
